PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program
The purpose of this PGY2 residency in internal medicine is to prepare the post-doctoral resident to serve as a highly skilled and knowledgeable internal medicine clinical pharmacist in a hospital setting and full-time or adjunct faculty member.
The residency program is based at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in the department of Internal Medicine in Tulsa, Oklahoma. OSU Medical Center is a 195-bed hospital serving the Tulsa metro and surrounding areas and is the largest osteopathic teaching facility in the nation. More than 150 medical residents are trained on an annual basis and countless medical, nursing, and pharmacy students rotate through the facility continuously. The pharmacy team consists of 17 pharmacists, including 12 residency-trained clinical pharmacists who work in internal medicine, family medicine, ICU, emergency medicine, HIV, diabetes education/management, and other specialties.
This one-year position is offered in partnership with the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy (SWOSU COP) and provides the resident with the academic rank of Voluntary Instructor in Pharmacy Practice. This partnership allows the resident the opportunity to actively participate in didactic and laboratory teaching activities at the College or Pharmacy as well as didactic teaching at the OSU College of Medicine.
SWOSU COP is located in Weatherford, OK (approximately 1 hour west of Oklahoma City). The average class size is 40 students, which allows for a favorable faculty-student ratio. The SWOSU College of Pharmacy has maintained a tradition of excellence in pharmacy education since its founding in 1939. Southwestern COP is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Our residency is structured to provide a strong foundation in internal medicine and also has a focus in the treatment of outpatient HIV patients and in teaching/precepting. We have the unique ability to provide teaching opportunities for our residents to a variety of different healthcare professionals including: pharmacy students, medical students, and medical residents. Our pharmacy residents work closely with the medical residents at our institution and this collaborative environment serves to enhance the learning of both parties.

Residency Special Features
Required experiences include internal medicine (four months), infectious disease, emergency medicine, critical care (ICU), HIV ambulatory care.
A longitudinal rotation in a pharmacist-managed diabetes education/management service at the internal medicine clinic is also required.
Research will be conducted via a longitudinal experience with a team of preceptor mentors. The resident will complete a publication-quality research project and present that research at a meeting.
A longitudinal teaching experience is included as part of a required Teaching Certificate Program.
Elective options include, but are not limited to, HIV medicine, infectious disease, nephrology, cardiology, and administration.
Residents function as clinical pharmacists at OSU Medical Center and affiliated OSU Physicians practice sites.
Ten personal days, 5 holiday days, shared cost benefits package (health, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and LTD insurance), time and support to attend at least one residency conference and other educational materials.

Teaching Certificate Program
The Teaching Certificate Program is a required, longitudinal experience.
The pharmacy resident is responsible for completing required teaching development workshops, readings, and discussions; developing and delivering a minimum of two, large-class didactic lectures; participating in student journal clubs; participating in pharmacotherapy labs; facilitating small group activities and discussions, and grading and providing feedback to students. The resident may also be responsible for delivering educational modules to medical residents and/or medical students, assisting in experiential learning under the supervision of a preceptor; the PGY2 resident will then act as the primary preceptor for SWOSU pharmacy students during at least one one-month rotation in internal medicine, likely in the spring semester. The resident will develop a teaching philosophy and portfolio as part of the residency experience.
