1st R: Read

Read each section with the aim of answering the questions you have just posed

2nd R Recite

Recite aloud in your own words the answer to each question. Make notes on your answer in your own words.

Turn headings & subheadings into questions using the words: how, what, where, why & when

3rd R: Review

Review your answers periodically without using your notes. If you get stuck, review your notes and try again.

  • The title, headings and subheadings
  • Graphics, tables charts
  • Review PowerPoint, questions or study guides
  • Introductory and concluding paragraphs
  • Turn all headings into questions for study purposes
  • "What do I already know about this subject, and why should I care about it?”
  • Answer your questions
  • Answer end-of-section, end-of-chapter
  • Make index cards out of terms
  • Make graphic aids to present the information visually
  • Reread parts which are not clear or rephrase
  • Reward yourself after sustained work (For example: a Hershey’s kiss for each section), or you could:
Chart that reads: decide on the task to be done. Set the timer to 25 minutes. Work on the task until the timer rings. Take a short five-minute break. Take a 15-30 minute break.

  • Take notes from the text but write the information in your own words
  • Underline or highlight important points you've just read
