SWOSU Music Education Students Attend
National Championship Event

November 16, 2019. SWOSU Music Education students along with Mr. Marc Mueller, Director of Bands attended the 2019 Bands of America Grand National Championship in Indianapolis. Students were exposed to music industry leaders, competition logistics and were able to see outstanding high school bands from across the nation compete for top honors. Music Performance (B.M.)

  • Piano or Organ 
  • Voice
  • Orchestral Instrument

A Bachelor of Music Performance allows the graduate to follow career paths as a professional performer, a private music instructor, a church musician, a composer or arranger or to pursue graduate studies. Students in the program can also choose an area of emphasis to further their education experience. 

Elective Studies in Business (B.M.)

Graduates who choose to take electives in business courses can broaden their options outside of music performance. They can work in many facets of the music business industry: arts management, instrument manufacturer representative, or music store sales and service. 

Music Therapy (B.M.)

  • Vocal/Keybaord Emphasis

A Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy prepares students to work with a variety of clients and in various settings such as public schools, adult day care facilities or nursing homes, community based mental health or rehabilitation centers, psychiatric hospitals, or in private practice settings. Students are prepared to work with all ages, children through adult.

Music Education (B.M.Ed.)

  • Instrumental/General Music
  • Vocal/General Music

A Bachelor of Music Education allows the graduate to follow career paths as a band director or choir director in the public schools, a professional performer, a private music instructor, a church musician, a composer or arranger, or to pursue graduate studies. The degree leads to certification by the state of Oklahoma for employment in the public schools. 

Master of Music (M.M.)

Performance

For those who wish to increase their knowledge and hone their skills further, SWOSU offers a Masters of Music Performance. The career outlook for the graduate of the Master’s program allows them to take a leading role in career paths as a professional performer, a private music instructor, a church musician, a composer or arranger, or to pursue doctoral graduate studies. 

Music Therapy

Through continued advanced study, a Master of Music in Music Therapy prepares students to work with a variety of clients and in various settings such as the public schools, adult day care facilities or nursing homes, community based mental health or rehabilitation centers, psychiatric hospitals, or in private practice settings. Students are prepared to work with all ages, children through adult. 

Choral/Instrumental Music Education

Through advanced academic studies, a Master of Music Education prepares the graduate to follow career paths as a professional educator, performer, or private music instructor. This option also prepares to the student to go on to pursue doctoral graduate studies if desired.

Faculty

drummer-2017The Department of Music is comprised of 14 full-time faculty, six adjunct faculty and serves a student body of approximately 130 music majors. Many non-majors choose to get involved in our music programs by playing in our ensembles as well. The department is small enough to feel welcoming and large enough to offer a rigorous curriculum that helps our students acquire professional goals and employment. We offer music degrees at the bachelor's and master's levels.

Our highly skilled faculty members offer expert applied instruction in woodwinds, brass, keyboard, percussion, strings and voice while our wind ensembles, choral ensembles, orchestra, jazz ensembles and chamber ensembles are recognized as being outstanding in the Western Oklahoma region.

Scholarships

Prospective students must apply to SWOSU by March 1 to be considered for scholarships.

Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and the American Music Therapy Association.
