Licensing & Trademark

Trademark Ownership and Protection

Registered Marks

All Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) names, logos, wordmarks, the Bulldog mascot, seal, and related insignia are legally protected trademarks of the University. These marks may not be altered, distorted, or combined with other graphics.

Intellectual Property

SWOSU maintains exclusive rights to its brand assets. Use of these marks for any purpose beyond official university business requires permission through the Office of Public Relations & Marketing. Unauthorized use may constitute trademark infringement and is subject to legal action.

Protection & Oversight

The University partners with its licensing administrator to monitor, enforce, and approve trademark usage. All approved uses must display the ™ symbol as appropriate.

Rules for Internal and External Use

Internal Use

Academic and administrative units may use official SWOSU marks on sanctioned communications, websites, signage, and materials that promote the University’s mission. Units may not create independent logos or identities outside the approved brand system.

External Use

Vendors, partners, and outside organizations must secure permission prior to using SWOSU marks. University marks cannot be used to endorse political campaigns, religious groups, or commercial products not directly connected with SWOSU’s mission.

Restricted Uses

University marks may not appear in connection with alcohol, drugs, tobacco, firearms, or offensive/degrading content.

Vendor Licensing and Approval Process

Approved Vendors List

Only vendors officially licensed through the University’s licensing program are authorized to produce merchandise or promotional goods bearing SWOSU marks. A current list of licensed vendors is maintained on the licensing portal.

Application Process

Prospective vendors must apply through the licensing program, meet quality standards, and agree to brand usage rules. Upon approval, vendors are granted limited rights to reproduce SWOSU marks on specified goods.

Purchasing Policy

All SWOSU departments, offices, and student groups ordering apparel, promotional items, or merchandise must purchase through a licensed vendor. Exceptions are not permitted.

Student Organization and Club Usage

Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs)

Official RSOs may use SWOSU marks in connection with their organization name, provided designs are approved and items are ordered through licensed vendors. The University reserves the right to review and deny designs that conflict with brand standards.

Non-Commercial Use

Student organizations may produce T-shirts, posters, or other items for their members or events, but resale for profit is prohibited unless prior approval is obtained.

Intramural & Club Sports

Sports clubs may incorporate SWOSU marks with the required “Club” designation (e.g., SWOSU Soccer Club). This ensures distinction from varsity athletics while maintaining brand integrity.
