Attendance
The administration and faculty of SWOSU expect students to regularly attend the classes in which they are enrolled. Individual instructors shall determine the degree to which student absences shall affect class grades. Students will be notified of this policy on course syllabi. If the instructor does not mention attendance policies, class members should ask for specific guidelines. Students may be withdrawn from a course for excessive absences upon the request of the instructor.
Faculty members will excuse absences due to participation in formally University sponsored activities including course-related field trips, student involvement in research presentations or academic symposiums, artistic performances, NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)/NIRA (National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association) athletic events, PLC (Presidents Leadership Class) sponsored events, or other events approved for student participation by the VP for Student Services and/or VP for Academic Affairs. Since absences are known in advance, the student should provide documentation and communicate with the faculty member to plan accordingly. Additionally, students involved in activities that would result in multiple absences from hands-on courses and laboratories are encouraged to enroll in those courses in the off-season or plan accordingly and select a course section that would be less likely to conflict with the activities.
If a student will miss three or more days of classes due to illness or emergency, students may request the Dean of Students to notify their instructors. Students should be prepared to provide documentation regarding their absences to the Dean of Students.
