Getting Married?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) collects information as of the date you submit the form, and this information is used to determine your financial aid eligibility for the academic year. Although the federal FAFSA process allows certain updates, marital status will not be updated after your FAFSA has been submitted. Your marital status on the date you file the application will remain in effect for the entire aid year, and we will not make adjustments based on marital changes that occur afterward.
Marital status cannot be projected or modified after submission for institutional processing. Because marital status can affect dependency status, household size, number in college, and income information—all key components of the aid calculation—it is important to consider the timing of your FAFSA submission.
If you are planning to get married, you may want to determine whether filing your FAFSA before or after your wedding date would be more beneficial for your situation. We encourage you to contact a financial aid counselor if you would like assistance evaluating how your filing date may impact your eligibility.
